Doctor No James Bond Novels Ian Fleming Books
Buyer beware. Amazon sells different versions of this book (and other Ian Fleming novels). I saw two available Dr. No versions, one for 99 cents and one for $7.99. I bought the cheaper of the two, only to later discover that this version is not the original. It is only 88 pages long (compared to 257 pages for the higher priced version). Also, the text has been rewritten for a reader who is around 12 years old. IOW, it reads very much like a Hardy Boys book!I went back to the Amazon page describing this book and nowhere does it indicate that it has been edited, simplified or abridged in any way. I feel ripped off. Yeah, it's only a buck, but still...

Doctor No James Bond Novels Ian Fleming Books Reviews
This is a very nice -formatted book. I would rate the format of the ebook 5 stars. The content 3 stars. Only because it's Ian Fleming, and really only deserves 3 stars for any of his works. These are modern pulp-fiction classics, the kind you read for fun not for great literature, and still wonder how they became established as a springboard for such a popular franchise. Just the same, it was a fun & enjoyable read, I will finish this series, and do recommend this format.
Another enjoyable enough Bond book. The star reductions weren't for the racism and sexism, there is plenty throughout the book since that is a given with Fleming's Bond novels. If taking that into consideration the rating would always be much lower.
That being said, this was enjoyable with the infamous Dr. No. Although it didn't quite live up to the expectation. The dialogue between villains and Bond are among the best parts of these novels. Although it was good with Dr. No, I think it could have been better.
Other parts weren't that believable and characters didn't follow the script that was laid out for them. It was enjoyable for a book that takes a few days to read. It had the usual suspense and page turning effect as other Bond novels.
Great title. Short, simple, feels like it is supposed to mean more than one thing, while also just sounding cool. The first Bond movie, but not the first book. I really enjoy how different the books are from the movies. If you were expecting a novelization of the film you will be shocked, but I love it, sort of like an alternate cut of the movie version I know so well.
This was written in 1958 so some of the racial or gender attitudes can be jarring, but don’t let that dissuade you from experiencing Fleming’s unique writing style. I’ve never quite come across a writer like him. He’s very detail oriented, almost like he is recalling a true memory from his life, which may be what he was going for. Would you believe there is a giant squid in here? I couldn’t, but loved it all the same. Just buy all of these, they are great.
This is how old I am-I remember sitting in the Rialto Theatre watching the coming attractions trailer for 'Dr. No' starring Sean Connery as James Bond. While I couldn't wait to see the movie, I also didn't want to wait that long to know the story so I raced to the local library to find the book. I devoured it in a few days. When I saw the movie made from it, like every young man at the time, I was drawn into a world I didn't know existed. Subsequently, I read the couple of previously published Fleming books and over time read each new Bond adventure when it came out. Since Fleming's passing, other writers have picked up Bond and done their best to duplicate the tone and style that Fleming created. But they rarely succeed. I say that to frame my criticism of Dr. No now having re-read it after all these years. I'm a published writer myself and hopefully today possessing a more critical eye, and as such I find this early work of Fleming's to be sophomoric and one-dimensional. Bond himself is only described as having black hair, not giving the reader much else to fix the imagination on. The plot, if you've seen the movie, is close to the book but Fleming lacks, at this stage of his writing anyway, any real descriptive powers or the ability to build suspense. His matter-of-fact style works better in later books but this one could have used some helpful editing. If you want to read Fleming at his best grab 'You Only Live Twice' or 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service'. This one's a thumbs up, but just barely.
I first met James Bond when this book came out in paperback, and I was immieditly hooked on his adventures and life, I quickly got all of the previously released books and was further immersed in Ian Fleming's wonderful creations. His writing has always. been so precise and was able to immediately paint a picture in my mind of what was happening. I devoured the earlier books and then I saw a preview of a new movie coming out. DR, NO!!!
Now all these years later I find the same experience as I did in 1960, and I was rather disappointed that the series was not available for the , until now!!
If you have only followed the movies as I know so many have, I cannot recommend strongly enough that you purchase these books and read them in the order that they were published as they cover in sequence 12 years in the life of the greatest SPY who ever lived.
You will be transported back in time to the cold war very vividly and quite realistically described all without dragging down the story. You will also meet the man James Bond, a very loyal and caring person with a very dirty job that had to be done,
I have had the greatest pleasure over the years and have visited several or the Pubs and places described in this to me wonderful series of books.
Annually and sometimes more than that, I read the series again. I have tried to pickup a book later in sequence to just read that one story again and after about 2 chapters I put it done and dive in once again to the series,
I hope you can find at least a large part of the wonderful experience I have and continue to have with Dr. No and all of the other classic work by Ian Fleming.
