My favorite book in the "Dark" Carpathian long, long, never ending series. This book I read stand alone. I enjoyed reading it. I highly recommend this gritty, emotional and gripping paranormal love story. In my opinion the best story in the series!!!********CAUTION POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD> PLEASE STOP NOW IF YOU DON"T WANT READ ANY SPOILERS>THANKS**********
Hero is imprisoned by vampire hunters into a coffin where he can't heal himself but is in torment with wounds given by hunters. He is literally suffering unimaginable pain with no end in sight. Heroine is half vampire and doesn't even know it. Her human mother was mate to a full fledge vampire that mated with her but married another. Without full mating her mother slowly lost her will to live and died in sorrow. This torments heroine as she tries find cure for her "blood disease" and also try protect herself from pain she raised seeing her mother in.
Heroine starts having these dreams and hearing this voice in her head telling her to come to this far away country to save a man locked up in a coffin. She thinks she is going crazy, so it takes her years before she finally does go. She is being hunted by these hunters as well and must be careful about getting caught. She finally saves hero, but his half mad! He recognizes heroine but mistreats her without realizing it. He goes crazy if she is not near him, extremely jealous and possessive, and can't remember anything past his salvation (the heroine). Since she is also a doctor she works to heal him and end his torment. However, she doesn't know how to heal a vampire but a human so process is slow.
Eventually, hero's family finds him and comes to visit. He goes mad and almost kills them all. Heroine is able to calm him and get him to reason. He allows them to help them both heal. In process they found out about what heroine is and educate her. She realizes she is hero's mate and who her father is. Hero pushes his family away and tells them he still needs to heal but appreciates their help. He allows them to help him to a point before he takes heroine away to secrete undercover cave. Have I mention how mad he is and possessive? Do to his torment he can't be far from her or have many near her.
Heroine's father has his own secrets that place everyone in danger. Hero finds out who orchestrated his capture and years of torture. Heroine finds out what drove her mother crazy and who she is. Hero must fight his demons and become the vampire-man heroine needs to protect them all from these hunters and master villain.
The final show down is well written scene in which hero gets his revenge on the super villain. The ending was sweet. This imperfect hero, with PTSD, still needs to heal but heroine pledges to be by his side through it all. It ends with HFN as hero and heroine recognize they need to still heal, but they also realize they have all time in the world to do it together. Really, very sweet tormented couple. Hero was heroine's first and the love scenes were sweet. Beware this read can be gritty and intense at times. Beautiful love story.

Dark Desire Christine Feehan Books Reviews
One of my favorite of the series. I read some other reviews who think that Shea was weak because she kept questioning the connection she felt to Jacques. I disagree. If she had accepted it without question, that would have been unbelievable. As with the Dark Prince, the heroine is brought into a completely different culture and needs time to adjust to the "insta-love" the Carpathian's feel for their true mates. Jacques and Shea's story is one of my favorites along with Dark Prince and Dark Magic. Have re-read all several times.
‘Is that such a terrible fate, love? To be with me? Am I truly such a monster then? I don’t know how to be with you, I feel trapped, like I can’t move or think.’
If you read Dark Prince you will probably remember Jacques as the fun, younger brother of Mikhail. He was easily one of my favorite characters in that book so it was very hard to see what a terrible state he was in during this book. Gone was the teasing, playful man we came to know in the first book and in its place was a horribly broken man who was pretty much more animal than man. After being caught and tortured and then buried alive for the past 7 years, the Jacques we meet in this book is very different than the one we knew. It was very sad to see how broken he was and how hard it was for him to keep a fragile grip on his sanity. Some of the early scenes were very intense as he is first uncovered by Shea, the woman (and human surgeon) that he’s felt connected to and has been calling out to for the past 7 years. In his fragmented mind he initially views her with hatred thinking that she’s ignored his calls for help for years and intends on punishing her for her abandonment. There are some very tenuous moments between them when Shea gets him back to her cabin and sets out to heal the damage done to his body. It was even more heartbreaking when he would have moments of sanity but then would slip back into his rage because you saw flashes of the old Jacques trying to get out.
I liked Shea, once again we have a feisty, independent human that is thrown into the intense world of the Carpathians not really by choice. I love how she challenges the other Carpathian men, so far between her and Raven I can really see these human women totally shaking things up for these guys. Times they are a changing! There was a very interesting connection with Shea and the events of the first book though, which I thought was pretty clever and ended up playing a very important part in this book. We also got to meet up with Mikhail, Raven and Gregori again and learned some very important news. I liked that we got to see more of the bond between the Carpathian men, some of the teasing between Mikhail and Gregori was some much needed humor in an otherwise very intense book. I love seeing how exasperated Gregori is with the women, I really look forward to seeing when he finally meets his lifemate, I feel like she’s definitely going to give him a run for his money!
This book had a lot of the intense romance like the first book but I found it not to be quite as dense as the first one which made it a little quicker to read. Don’t get me wrong, there was still plenty of crazy intensity both in the romance and in the massive mood swings of Jacques. These Carpathians feel everything to the extreme and it can be a bit tiring keeping up with it all but I did get a better sense for their culture and what they were all about in this book. I still had a lot of questions after the first one but I felt things were explained better in this one. The world is really starting to take shape and I thought the “rules” were much clearer. Around the halfway mark the danger and action really picks up and the second half of the book went quite quickly for me.
I wasn’t 100% sold after the first book but was willing to stick with it for a while longer and I am glad I did. I really enjoyed this book and if the others are similar I think I will really enjoy this series!
I did not read Dark Prince, the first in this series, and this is the first book I have read by this author. The opening chapters were very intense, describing the horrific experiences of Jacques as a result of being tortured by two humans accusing him of being a vampire. He senses a woman and subconsciously calls to her. Shea is a young surgeon who hides the fact that she has what she thinks is a rare blood disorder.
In the course of the book it is revealed that half her make up is the same as Jacques, that is Carpathian, and that is why they are inexorably drawn together as moth to flame. But Shea does not actually find him for many years, leaving Jacques in agony until she does.
The Carpathians are an ancient but dying race with supernatural powers. They are dying out because they rarely conceive and when they do, it is rarely female. This creates a situation where there is an excess of unattached males. The longer they go before finding a lifemate, the more likely they are to turn into vampires.
I love thrush descriptions in this book, being drawn into the scenes, feeling and sensing what the characters do. This book contains some violence and some highly erotic sex scenes.
My favorite book in the "Dark" Carpathian long, long, never ending series. This book I read stand alone. I enjoyed reading it. I highly recommend this gritty, emotional and gripping paranormal love story. In my opinion the best story in the series!!!
