This is one of my top 3 GLH books!I was first introduced to Grace Livingston Hill as a young reader. She was my first foray into Christian or Inspirational Fiction. I enjoy her simplistic writing style, her ability to speak on lifestyle purity in away that is completely foreign today and may have even been foreign in her own time, her ability to bring redemption in a dark world, and for her simplistic preaching within the story lines.
Marjorie loses a mother and gains a family in this story! While searching through the things left after her mother's passing, Marjorie discovers she was adopted and not by the cleanest of means. She seeks out her biological family and finds them in dire straights. Despite their protests, she uses her newly gained inheritance to get things back to a more normal existence. She gets a doctor for those who are ill, food on the table and in the pantry, bedding, and so much more. Despite the reluctance and expected pride, the family welcomes her back into their arms and allows her to assist them. During this time, Marjorie meets Gideon, a young pastor, who helps her come to a realization of being saved and opens her eyes to the truth found in the Scriptures. Their story isn't the main focus, but rather the relationships and discoveries among the family and their "new" sister. I quite enjoy that it was written that way.
Please read this story! It is such a wonderful story of love, family, generosity and biblical truth.

Brentwood Grace Livingston Hill #18 Grace Livingston Hill 9780842303644 Books Reviews
This was one of the first books I ever read by GLH and It has always been a favorite. Marjorie's joy in finding her birth family felt very real and having her come into the home and immediately do things that they couldn't because she loved them was wonderful! Even though her motives were viewed suspiciously at first, she kept doing what needed to be done and she didn't put herself forward.
I loved the story of her sister also, it was a great match to her own story. Loved the kids and the parents also. It just shows that no matter how hard you try sometimes we all need a helping hand.
Another vehicle for the sweet gospel message, although heroine in this story confronts no real conflicts. But it is a delightful story nonetheless, for who wouldn't smile at the thought of lavishing gifts on loved ones if it was in their power to do so?
This is one of GLH's best books. So enjoyed the family unity and the sacrifices each made to be a complete family. So heart warming and uplifting as all her books are. Always makes me want to be a better person, which so few books do these days. One of the ones you can't lay down. I put this in the category of Enchanted Barn and Victoria Grayson's Obsession, Best Man and well I could just go on and on. Truly one of the best authors of all times.
I really enjoyed this book. I was adopted as an infant and was always told I was adopted , picked, special and grew not under my Mom's heart but in it. I haven't been able to know my birth family but would like to believe they would be excited to meet me and know me. I know Marjorie loved her adoptive Mom very much and was able to understand why she didn't want to let her birth mother meet her. It was great how she worked her way into everyone's heart and it wasn't because of the gifts or money
I read this story quite a few times, way back when I had the paperback. Unfortunately, my eyes no longer focus on fine print, so the is a miracle for me and I'm reading all the older books I can find. I was so thrilled when I found this one. It's one of those old fashioned stories, including a lot about faith and morality, but it's not heavy handed on the religious end. Just a good, plesant up-beat book, set in the 1930's, probably during the depression.
Adopted as a newborn infant by a wealthy family, Marjorie sets out a week before Christmas to find her birth parents when her adoptive parents die. Marjorie finds them in abject poverty, starvation and sickness. She tries to put things to rights with fist-fulls of cash, and deals with her identical twin sister who is a little bitter towards her and gets to know her various siblings. The reader will find this book hard to put away as generous Marjorie spends lavishly to get her new family to a place of living again. She purchases their beautiful old home, Brentwood back as a Christmas gift to her birth parents but as the new year approaches, Marjorie is presented with a dilemma and goes back to Chicago to make a life altering decision.....
An adopted young woman loses her mother. Afterwards she finds a letter detailing her birth, the family she was born to, and more.
This tale features a young woman of means and her efforts to have a family again, her birth family. The eldest two of her siblings are not glad to see her, feeling she has just come to Take Advantage of them. She is greeted with animosity.
Gradually that changes as they see her making right some of the bad things that happened. She gets their furnishings out of of the pawn shop, buys food, etc.
And she shows that through faith things do improve. The eldest brother and her share a profound spiritual friendship. Through the brother she learns of Brentwood, the former family home. It was lost through fraud, the dad losing his job, and a nefarious real estate agent. Plus a bank failed too ...
However thanks to the blessings, Brentwood is restored. Love is in the air.
It's a wonderful story and unfolds nicely. I'll be reading this one again soon. I'd love to be a part of their special circle.
