The Flight of the Silvers The Silvers Book One The Silvers Series 1 Daniel Price Books

This book did get off to a good start - it's always fun to see the world destroyed, and he does it well. As the story progresses it loses steam, and as the characters discover their powers, or "weirdnesses" as they call them, it starts to become silly. The characters spend most of the book going through young adult angst, more worried about who they're going to couple up with than the rather dramatic things that are going on around them.

In the end, not much has really happened since they found themselves in this parallel world - they traveled across the country, had a few run ins along the way, and met the guy they expected to meet. The story doesn't even really have an end - just a setup for book 2.

If the book had been half the length (and it could have been) it might have been diverting. As is it was a long slog with shallow characters for not much of a payoff. Meh.

The Flight of the Silvers The Silvers Book One The Silvers Series 1 Daniel Price Books Reviews

This book is seriously frieking awesome in so many ways. There's so many books and movies now that almost any story is somewhat similar or can be related to another story; but this book is so unique and mind boggling. If someone told me the premise of this book, I would never have picked it up. But i'm so glad I did. There's barely ever a dull moment and the characters feel so real; they all have unique personalities and flaws, and their group dynamics and journey feel so real even though the book and setting is very sci-fi.
The writing style is also what makes this book so good. It doesn't come across as artsy or fancy, but just describes things straight to the point and often times with some subtle and not-so-subtle humor. I didn't strike me until about a third of the way through the book how awesome the writing and style was. That's when I started re-reading pages just to admire the cleverness and artfulness that is almost hidden. It's not in your face like he's trying to show off like some authors, but some of the lines and phrases are just so well put together. Basically its super artful in a subtle way that you might not realize until you stop and look at it. But you probably won't stop because you'll turning the next page already.
While reading this I can't tell you how many times I thought to myself "How the hell did this guy come up with this stuff?" There's some things in this book that are just unlike anything i've read. Essentially this is a sci-fi book that involves time distortion, parallel worlds/timelines (but mainly focusing on one), and a group of people that possess different time-distorting powers. Yea, like I said, if someone had told me all of that then I would have passed on this book. But its just so dang good. Even with all that time-distorting and superpowers the story just feels so real. I think that's what makes this so good is how the author somehow makes this story incredibly believable.
The climax and ending answered many questions that I was dying to know about while reading, but also provoked as many more questions and excitement for the next books. Oh yea, there's 2 more books in the series with the next one supposedly coming out this winter (late 2015 I think). But even this one by itself is very much able to stand on its own.
I can't even begin to imagine what the author has in store for the next books. Do yourself a favor and enjoy this action-packed, character-driven, and thought provoking book.

*I also just want to note that I am not a fan of parallel worlds, parallel timelines, or parallel universes. And not in stories either. But somehow I loved this book. If you're the same way, just trust me and put all those thoughts aside and trust me on this one- you'll actually love this book.
I heard about this book when I saw a tweet from Penguin highlighting the 2.99 ebook sale price. The description sounded intriguing, so I downloaded it. But somehow I failed to see the last sentence - "Brilliantly imagined and electrifying from the first page, The Flight of the Silvers is the thrilling first book in a genre-bending new series."

And so I started reading - blissfully unaware that after finishing 600+ pages, I'd be left hanging with a million unanswered questions, already missing characters that I'd formed a serious attachment to & plotting ways to create a portal into Daniel Price's apartment to try and read the draft of the next book or better yet, shift time to when the whole series is complete.

The FAQs on the authors site helped a bit with some of my questions [...]

Unfortunately, most of the answers were "that will be answered in book 2" or even "that will be answered in book 3"!

Perhaps could update the book description with a warning to readers about suffering withdrawal symptoms after finishing The Flight of the Silvers!

Aside from that, I have to say I loved this book. I don't post a lot of reviews & I'm pretty stingy with my 5 star ratings.

I was immediately drawn into the story from the beginning. Who were those 3 strangers who could slow down time & why did they save the Givens family? What was it about the sisters that would be important? I had to know more.

In addition to the unique story, I really liked the characters. What I liked most is that none of them are perfect and as a result, they become more "real". There aren't always clear dividing lines between good & evil. At this point in the series, the reader doesn't know what the motivations are behind a number of characters - The Pelletiers, Rebel & his group, Cedric Cain etc. Even the most heinous characters might unexpectedly do something good (Evan - I'm looking at you here when you spend most of the story tormenting the Silvers but then give Theo some helpful info).

What's even better, is that the characters grow & change as they adapt to their new world and their new abilities. The people you meet at the beginning aren't the same by the end of the book.

I tore through the book in 2 days. Since the reader doesn't know any more than the characters do, the only way to find out is to keep reading. This pacing also helps the reader keep track of the numerous details about AltAmerica, Temporis and each character's "weirdness" - we aren't given too much information at once. The only time I found myself looking back in the book was with some of Mia's notes - something would sound familiar & I would think, "wait, didn't Mia get a note about this?".

As far as I'm concerned, The Song of the Orphans can't get here fast enough.
